Let His Light Shine
"In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16
(Full text: Matthew 5:14-16)
After delivering the famous Beatitudes, Jesus gives His disciples two powerful metaphors for how to live the Christian life. First, He calls them salt. That is a devotional for another day.
The metaphor that captured my heart this morning was light.
Jesus tells His followers:
“Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house... In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:15-16)
What stopped me in my tracks was not the command to shine. It was the reason behind it.
Jesus does not say, “Let your light shine so people will praise you.”
He does not say, “Let your light shine so God can pat you on the back.”
He does not even say, “Let your light shine so you can feel good about your good deeds.”
He says to let our light shine so that others may see and glorify our Heavenly Father.
That is huge.
As believers, we have been saved by grace, filled with the Holy Spirit, and adopted into the family of God. Through His work in us, we have the privilege of reflecting His light into the world around us. When we love well, serve faithfully, extend kindness, offer encouragement, show patience, or use the gifts God has given us, we are not simply doing good things. We are putting God’s character on display.
And somehow, in His kindness, God allows our obedience to become an invitation.
An invitation for others to see Him.
An invitation for others to recognize that the joy, peace, wisdom, generosity, and love they see in us did not originate with us.
An invitation for others to glorify the Father.
What a powerful thought. For some reason it just really blows my mind.
We can bring glory to God not only through our worship, but through the way we live. But, we can also overflow with His light in such a way that others stop, take notice, and turn their eyes toward Him. Praise Him. Even those who do not yet know Him can recognize something different and be drawn to the source. God can use anything for His glory.
The more I thought about Jesus’ words, the more I wondered what causes us to hide the light He has placed within us.
Sometimes it is sin. We cling to attitudes, habits, or choices that dim our witness and obscure the work God is doing in our lives. We may still belong to Him, but our disobedience makes it harder for others to see Him clearly.
Sometimes it is a hardened heart. Disappointment, bitterness, unforgiveness, or pride can slowly build walls around our hearts. We become less compassionate, less patient, less willing to love others as Christ has loved us. The light is still there, but it becomes increasingly hidden beneath layers we were never meant to carry.
Sometimes it is our circumstances. Grief, loss, uncertainty, anxiety, and suffering can make us want to withdraw from the world around us. When life hurts, it is natural to turn inward. Yet some of the most powerful testimonies of God’s faithfulness are found in believers who continue to trust Him in the middle of difficult seasons.
And sometimes we hide the light simply because we are afraid. Afraid of standing out. Afraid of rejection. Afraid of what others might think if we openly live for Christ.
Yet Jesus never calls us to create light. He simply calls us not to hide it.
Of course, we are not called to be perfect. I will be the first to admit that, most days, in my current season, it is hard for me to even recognize or find His light in me, much less to share it.
The beautiful truth is that the light does not originate with us. It comes from Him. Our responsibility is not to shine brighter through our own effort, but to remove whatever is covering the light He has already placed within us. Through repentance, surrender, and dependence on the Holy Spirit, we allow others to see more clearly the God we serve.
Today, may we resist the temptation to hide what God has placed within us. May we shine brightly—not for attention, recognition, or applause—but so that those around us might see the goodness of God and join us in praising Him. Be the reason someone glorifies God today.
